OpenAI Says Its Models Produced Three Original Scientific Results — One Formalized in Lean

The company claims its AI generated a proof of the local smoothing conjecture, a refutation of the Exponential Time Hypothesis, and a mathematical existence result tied to quantum field theories — now under expert review.

OpenAI announced what may be the most consequential claim of the year: that its models produced three original scientific results across mathematics, computer science, and physics, rather than merely assisting human researchers. According to @DrMetaMojo, the three results include a proof of the local smoothing conjecture, a refutation of the Exponential Time Hypothesis, and a mathematical existence result involving quantum field theories. The first, he noted, was formalized in Lean — the proof assistant that allows mathematical arguments to be mechanically verified rather than taken on trust.

That detail matters more than the headline. A novel proof produced by a language model invites immediate skepticism, because models are fluent in the language of mathematics without necessarily being correct in its substance. Formalizing a result in Lean raises the bar considerably: the system will not accept a proof that contains a logical gap. If the local smoothing claim survives in Lean, it is no longer a matter of whether the model sounds convincing — it is a matter of whether the formal object type-checks.
