Anthropic's IPO Filing Shows $974M in Q2 Operating Profit — and an $80.7B Half-Year Loss

The S-1 lands with two numbers that seem to contradict each other, and the gap between them is already the most-argued figure in AI finance.

Anthropic's public offering filing dropped a pair of numbers that, read side by side, tell two completely different stories about the same company. According to @ChrisGPT, the company recorded $974 million in GAAP operating profit in Q2. According to @AIPolicyDaily, the same filing discloses an $80.7 billion net loss across the first half of the year. Both figures are real. Both come from the same document. The distance between them is the entire debate.

The reconciliation, per @ChrisGPT, is non-cash charges — the kind of accounting entries that appear when a company has issued convertible instruments, warrants, or preferred stock whose paper value has ballooned alongside a soaring private valuation. These are not dollars that left the building. They are marks against equity that flow through the income statement and produce a headline loss that dwarfs anything the business is actually spending. Strip them out, and the operating business cleared nearly a billion dollars in a single quarter.
