Reflection AI Unveils Beam, a 501B-Parameter Open Agentic Model Promising Frontier Reasoning at a Fraction of the Compute
Reflection AI introduced Beam, a 501-billion-parameter open-weight model built specifically for agentic reasoning, with full weights promised this month — the latest sign that open source is no longer trailing frontier labs by a comfortable margin.
Reflection AI announced Beam on Monday, describing it as "a highly efficient agentic open model with 501B total parameters" and claiming "frontier reasoning efficiency," according to the company's @reflection_ai account. The pitch is not raw size — plenty of models cross the half-trillion-parameter mark — but efficiency per unit of reasoning, the metric that actually determines whether an agent can run a long task without burning a budget. Reflection says full weights will be released this month, which is the detail that separates a benchmark flex from an actual contribution to the ecosystem.
Beam arrives in a week that is quietly becoming an inflection point for open-weight agentic models. The same day, developers were circulating results from what @marcopapa99 called a "nine-set shootout" for tool calling, pitting newer open releases against one another. The post also claimed GLM 5.3 "runs locally with 5M token KV cache" — a context-handling figure that, if it holds up under scrutiny, would push local inference into territory previously reserved for hosted frontier systems. Taken together, these are not isolated launches. They are a cluster of releases all aimed at the same target: agents that reason, call tools, and hold long context, running on weights anyone can download.
