OpenAI's DevDay Pivots From Chatbots to 'Dots': Always-On Agents That Keep Working After You Log Off
OpenAI used DevDay to launch Dots, a fleet of persistent background agents that run 24/7 on dedicated cloud infrastructure, alongside a cheaper GPT-6.1 Sol model — reframing the product from assistant to autonomous worker.
OpenAI spent years teaching the world to chat with an AI. At DevDay, it tried to teach the world to delegate to one. The company unveiled Dots, a system of always-on agents that, according to @TraffAlex, are pitched as "agents that never sleep" — background workers that continue executing tasks after the user logs off. The framing matters: this is the industry's clearest attempt yet to move from sessions to shifts.
The mechanics, as described by @DAGENTS, are more consequential than the branding. Each Dots agent reportedly gets its own cloud box and keeps working independently of the user's active session. That is a structural departure from the request-response pattern that has defined consumer AI since ChatGPT launched. An agent with persistent compute and no session boundary is less a tool you pick up and more a process you start and monitor.
