Demis Hassabis Reportedly Out as DeepMind CEO; Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat Said to Be Leaving Google

A viral report claims a major leadership shakeup at Google, with two of its most storied engineers departing to start a new lab and Hassabis pivoting fully to drug discovery.

One of the most consequential rumors of the year broke this week when @tenobrus reported — in a post that went viral — that Demis Hassabis has been ousted as DeepMind CEO, and that Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat are leaving Google to start a "~neolab." If accurate, this is not a routine reshuffle. Dean and Ghemawat are among the foundational engineers of modern distributed computing, the pair behind MapReduce and much of Google's core infrastructure. Their departure would represent an enormous loss of institutional knowledge at exactly the moment Google is fighting to hold its position in frontier AI.
