Base Launches MCP Gateway, Letting Claude and ChatGPT Execute DeFi Trades via Chat

Coinbase's Layer 2 network shipped a Model Context Protocol gateway that connects AI agents to six DeFi protocols — turning natural language into on-chain financial transactions. The agentic economy just got a front door.

Base, Coinbase's Ethereum Layer 2 network, has launched its MCP Gateway — a Model Context Protocol interface that allows AI agents like Claude and ChatGPT to execute on-chain DeFi actions directly from a chat interface. As @miyoshi_iam reported, the gateway connects to Base's L2 network and supports natural language prompts for executing swaps, lending, and other decentralized finance operations. The integration reportedly covers six DeFi protocols at launch, though the specific protocols were not detailed in the initial announcements.

The implications are significant and immediate. Until now, interacting with DeFi required navigating wallet interfaces, approving transactions manually, and understanding protocol-specific UIs. Base's MCP Gateway abstracts all of that behind a conversational layer. A user — or an autonomous agent — can theoretically say "swap 2 ETH for USDC on the best available rate" and have the gateway handle routing, execution, and settlement. As @kaiozinho0172 noted, the gateway lets agents execute actions "directly from a chat interface," collapsing what was previously a multi-step technical workflow into a single prompt.
