A joint team from Stanford and the Arc Institute has demonstrated that a protein-design language model, given only a DNA sequence as input, can autonomously generate hundreds of novel viral designs — of which 16 proved functional in laboratory validation. The work, which surfaced widely on social media this weekend, represents one of the most concrete demonstrations yet of dual-use risk in biological AI.
