Meta AI Overtakes ChatGPT in the App Store — and It's Not a Fluke

Meta's standalone AI app has surged past ChatGPT to become the top-ranked AI application on Apple's App Store, a milestone that crystallizes a real shift in consumer AI competition and raises questions about distribution, defaults, and what happens when a company with 3.3 billion monthly users decides to ship aggressively.

Meta AI has officially overtaken ChatGPT in the Apple App Store rankings, as confirmed by @Polymarket on Saturday. The move places Meta's standalone assistant — powered by the Llama model family — at the #2 overall position in the store, making it the highest-ranked AI app on iOS. Scale AI founder turned Meta executive Alexandr Wang celebrated the milestone, posting "meta AI is now #2 in the app store, top AI app! we are so back!" The tone was less corporate press release, more startup founder watching the hockey stick inflect.

The ranking matters more than it might seem. App Store position is a self-reinforcing loop: higher rank drives more organic downloads, which drives higher rank. For over two years, ChatGPT has been the default answer to "what AI app should I try?" among mainstream consumers. Losing that top slot to Meta — even briefly — signals that the distribution advantages of Meta's ecosystem are beginning to compound in ways OpenAI cannot easily replicate.
