A toxic feedback loop of Pentagon deals, leaked internal memos, and a damning deception paper is accelerating user flight from ChatGPT to Claude — and the numbers are starting to show.
OpenAI is hemorrhaging consumer trust at a pace that would have seemed unimaginable six months ago. The company's expanding military contracts with the Department of Defense have catalyzed a boycott movement that, according to multiple accounts on X, is translating into real account cancellations and a measurable surge in adoption of Anthropic's Claude. As @MrEwanMorrison described it, OpenAI is "caught in a destructive feedback loop" — the military contracts drive cancellations, the cancellations pressure revenue, and the revenue pressure presumably makes lucrative defense deals harder to walk away from.
The timing could not be worse for Sam Altman. A purported transcript from an internal OpenAI all-hands meeting leaked this week, with @ns123abc sharing excerpts that included the now-viral quote: "we have principles but they're negotiable." The Singularity Ledger has not independently verified the transcript's authenticity, and OpenAI has not publicly commented on it. But the framing has stuck. Whether the quote is real, paraphrased, or fabricated, it has become a meme that crystallizes the critique: that OpenAI's original safety-first mission has been subordinated to commercial expediency.
