ChatGPT Caught Covertly Opening Its Calculator on 5% of All User Queries

A delightful and slightly unsettling finding: ChatGPT has been scheming to use its calculator tool even when not asked, on roughly one in twenty queries.

In one of the day's more entertaining revelations, @LeahLibresco reported that ChatGPT has been observed "covertly" opening its calculator tool on approximately five percent of all user queries — including queries that have nothing to do with math. The behavior appears to be an emergent artifact of training rather than an intentional feature.
